What IELTS Score Do You Really Need for a Visa in 2025?
A plain-language guide for the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
If you’re looking to move abroad — maybe to study, work, or just start a new chapter — chances are someone’s going to ask you for your English test results.
For most people, that means IELTS. But the score you need? It really comes down to where you’re headed — and what you’re going there for.
Every country treats IELTS a bit differently. Even within the same country, two types of visas might ask for different versions of the test — or completely different scores.
This guide covers the current (2025) expectations in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
🇬🇧 If You’re Headed to the UK...
The UK doesn’t just care what you score — it also cares which version of the test you take. For visa purposes, they’ll only accept something called IELTS for UKVI.
You’ll need to book it at a test centre that’s been officially approved by UK Visas and Immigration.
What they want to see:
For college-level study (below a full degree):
About IELTS 4.0, or CEFR B1 across the board.
For university degrees or higher:
B2 level — which usually means IELTS 5.5 or more in every skill.
For working in healthcare or other skilled roles:
If you’re applying for a Health and Care Worker visa, the official UKVI requirement is IELTS 4.0 (CEFR B1) — that’s the bare minimum for the visa itself.
But here’s the catch: if you’re a nurse, doctor, or other licensed healthcare professional, you’ll also need to register with a UK professional body like the NMC or GMC. And they usually ask for a much higher score — often 6.5 or 7.0, depending on the role.
So while 4.0 gets you the visa, you’ll probably need to aim higher if you actually want to work in your profession once you arrive.
Innovator or religious roles:
Higher expectations again — you’re looking at 5.5 minimum in each section.
Family/spouse visas:
These depend on your situation — sometimes A1 is enough, sometimes B1. These usually involve Speaking and Listening only.
📅 And yes — your results must be less than two years old when you apply. Don’t let them expire before you hit submit.
🇺🇸 Applying in the US? It’s Case by Case
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule in the States. Whether you need IELTS — and what score — comes down to where you’re applying.
Universities and colleges generally ask for IELTS Academic, and most want scores somewhere between 6.0 and 7.5.
If you’re entering a licensed profession (like medicine, law, or education),there’s a good chance you’ll need IELTS too — but every board sets its own threshold.
✋ There’s no national visa requirement for IELTS in the US — but don’t be surprised if an employer or school asks for it anyway.
🇨🇦 Canada: It’s All About CLB Levels
Canada ties IELTS results to something called the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). And for most immigration or work routes, you’ll need the General Training version of IELTS — not Academic.
Here’s how it usually breaks down:
Express Entry (skilled workers):
You’ll probably need CLB 7 — which translates to IELTS 6.0 or above in all four skills.
Skilled trades route:
Slightly lower bar — IELTS 5.0 to 5.5 might be enough (CLB 5 or 6).
Provincial nominee programmes:
It depends on the province. Some ask for Academic IELTS, some for General. Most land between 6.0 and 7.5, though.
🕑 And just like the UK, your test results need to be current — not older than two years at the time of your profile or final application.
🇦🇺 Australia: Clear Guidelines, But No Flex
Australia’s pretty clear about what it expects for IELTS — but once those numbers are in place, they don’t leave much room to negotiate.
For skilled migration routes (like 189, 190, or 491),you’ll need at least a 6.0 in each part of the test — no skipping corners.
Health, law, teaching and similar fields?
Those often require 7.0 or above.
Shortage skill visa (Subclass 482):
You’ll need a 5.0 minimum overall, and no individual skill can drop below 5.0.
Student visas:
They expect IELTS Academic, and score expectations run from 5.5 to 7.0, depending on the school.
🚫 And don’t forget: Australia does not accept IELTS Online. You’ll need to take the test in person — on paper or computer — at a registered centre.
🇳🇿 New Zealand: A Bit More Flexible
New Zealand accepts both IELTS Academic and General, depending on what kind of visa you’re applying for.
Here’s what’s typical:
Skilled or resident visas:
You’ll likely need to hit between 6.5 and 7.0 overall.
Work visas:
Scores vary depending on the job, but 5.0 to 6.5 is a good ballpark.
Student visas:
IELTS Academic is required, and expectations are similar to Australia: 5.5 to 7.0 depending on the programme.
